End of 2011 - Migraine

Had a pretty good Christmas but saw the last few days of 2011 out with a Migraine.

I've suffered with this foul condition for many years but on Dec 28th, decided to try and visualize what the beginning of going into the 'M' zone actually feels like.

For me, it normally starts with a stiff neck that rises. There's a horrible drained feeling and a sensitivity to sound, then the shuddering starts. Quite often I end up vomiting several times and able to do nothing but lie in bed.

During a migraine I'll put my hand over my head and it feels as if I could fit my head within the palm of my hand... a bizarre shrunken head sensation...

This condition is remarkably common. I regard it as a huge waste of time but after I've had one, I get an enormous amount of energy and a lot of work done!!

Old Comic Strip/ Scrounger

Just found this old strip I made about 6 years ago. The frames aren't numbered but I think it's pretty clear the order in which they go.

Extremely loose style and towards the last frames the mother's nose definitely changes shape - but I don't think that matters. Glad to give it an airing, has been buried in a box for some time.

More Food Illustrations

Haven't posted on here for too long. It's not that I haven't been working. I have, but I am working between doing a thousand other (mostly boring projects) and the thousand other, mostly boring projects are getting in the way.

Here are two more food illustrations. It's difficult to get the cartoony feel of the line and yet capture the realism enough to make the food appear tasty. I think I may have managed it in 'Jamboree' . I hope so anyway.

These likenesses are hard to get. I've been grappling with Ms Hurley for some time and after chucking out some very carefully drawn, even slick looking pieces that took aaaaages, I have reverted to a sketch that took less than 10 minutes. It isn't totally Liz but there is enough of her to make it worth while. (Sorry you have one eye smaller than the other, Liz but you did in the shot I used for reference!)

Haven't posted up here for some time.

Currently lots going on.

Am hoping to exhibit some work in November which I would like to be mostly new drawings.

Here's a collage-y style doodle containing stuff that has been happening in my world. It isn't complete and I am going to post the finished piece alongside this one, in the near future. 'Tis black, white and red, again, a fave combination.

See the crappiness of my scanner. With lid firmly shut it lets in the light creating a shadowy effect that sometimes I enjoy and can work with but I got to get a new one.

Another new category for my website - apart from caricatures (hate that description) will be 'Food'.
I really like cooking and enjoy creating pics on the subject. It's a challenge to make a slightly cartoony, line drawing look appetizing but there are so many botanical illustrators out there and other realistic, technically brilliant food illustrators, there has to be something else.

Boris Johnson and Lily Cole

Hmmnnn, Boris,

I find that hair very interesting. It looks like a little kids. I mean, baby fine and a bit tangly and matted on one side (possibly where it got slept on).

It also reminds me of someone who is growing their short hair out. A sort of messy in between stage that has to be tolerated in order to get the desired, longer result.

Possibly Boris needs something to keep his hair out of his eyes. A pretty hair ornament perhaps?

Just finished this Lily Cole as the suspect Miss Scarlett, on an old fashioned Cluedo card.

Am currently working on a short (very short) graphic story .

A few months ago I was selling handmade comic books in GOSH ! comic store in Covent Garden.

Was really pleased that they all sold out but at £2.00 a pop, (the store only took 10 copies) I am not exactly able to live off the proceeds! Still, it was a start.

This new work will also end up as a handmade comic book but I think I will enter it for one of the current graphic novel competitions first.

I'm not that keen on putting really old images up here but this goes to prove that the hair theme has been going on in my work for quite some time.

This drawing was done around 1989. I think my 'lines' have loosened up since then and I am not nearly as concerned with detail as I was in those days.

I seem to have more than a passing preoccupation with 'hair'.

Several drawings on my website are hair related and here is another. I drew it before I began, The Death of Mousey Brown ( which also features hair and a coffin).

This picture which, as yet, has no title, was probably the result of my reading recently about Victorian hair jewellry (necklaces, broaches etc with 'loved ones' hair incorporated).

Considering both death and hair I made this picture of a woman, sorrowfully, cutting her own. Each lock will receive a 'decent burial'.

I can think of another drawing I made quite some time back, which I should post here. I will see if I can find it.
